Coble Farm sits off West Friendly Avenue on the west side of Greensboro, the Guilford College side of town. Townhomes and single-family. Vinyl and brick. Dryer vents go every which way: out the siding, out the brick, high on a two-story wall, through the roof.

Behind the dryer

A lot of these laundry rooms are tight. The short hose between the dryer and the wall gets crushed, or the cheap foil flex splits open. One split hose dumped so much lint behind the machine the whole room was dusty. The dryer still ran.

Cheap covers and birds

Plastic covers on the brick crack and dry-rot. We swapped one for stainless and the lint from that line sat on the walk. On the vinyl townhomes we use a metal siding cover with a bird-guard insert. Birds stay out. Lint still gets out. More in exterior vent cover replacements.

We have also found a bird nest packed all the way inside the pipe. Straw and grass, no airflow left. If a cover is broken or missing a flap, something will find it.

Roof vents

Plenty of these homes vent through the roof. The cover packs up and the whole line backs up. We go up, including the two-story townhomes. The ladder sits on the roof, not on the gutters.
